36 Iraqi refugees detained in Turkey need your help

I am writing on behalf of the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees (IFIR). IFIR aims to give essential help to Iraqi refugees experiencing difficulties. IFIR has been informed that 36 Iraqi nationals were arrested and detained two weeks ago in Turkey/Edirne.

I am writing this letter to request the immediate release of these refugees. IFIR believes that they have been arrested and detained unlawfully because they have the legal right to enter Turkey. IFIR has been informed that other refugees arrested with them have been released. IFIR contacted the Immigration Office of Edirne and were told that the Office can only provide information to legal representatives. However an official indicated that files are being considered individually with the Iraqi Embassy. This greatly concerns IFIR. If these 36 refugees are deported to Iraq their lives would be put at risk.

IFIR is also concerned about the health of the refugees while in detention. They include 9 women, 14 children and a 10 month old baby. IFIR has found out that their conditions in detention are very poor and unsuitable, particularly for the baby. The baby is suffering through lack of milk. Legal representatives cannot visit and provide milk for the baby. IFIR’s concerns are deepened by the fact that the Turkish authorities can legally detain the refugees for up to 6 months.

Although IFIR is in touch with the Human Rights Association (IHD) in Istanbul it has so far been unable to arrange legal representation for these refugees. Therefore, IFIR requests your support in raising public awareness of the health risks of their detention and support for IFIR’s call for the Turkish authorities to release them immediately.

Attached is a list of the names of the 36 detained Iraqi refugees. Please help them by drawing attention to their situation. Also please email the Turkish authorities at edirne@goc.gov.tr asking them to release these people immediately. If you need any further information do not hesitate to contact IFIR.

Yours faithfully
