It appears to be in preparation for a deportation flight<\/a>. While Britain is still at war in Iraq, it insists that it\u2019s safe to deport refugees to a war zone. <\/span><\/h3>\n

Samir Mohammad, who has been in Britain for 17 years, is one of them. \u00a0He\u2019s lived in Sheffield with his British wife Anne Marie and their children Zahara and Soran. <\/span><\/h3>\n

When Samir went for one of his regular sign-ins with the Home Office, he was locked in Colnbrook detention centre in Berkshire. <\/span><\/h3>\n

Anne Marie told Socialist Worker, \u201cI never thought something like this could happen. When I went to visit him on Sunday, he was so depressed I was worried he was going to hurt himself.<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s disgusting\u2014they have to realise that he\u2019s made a family here and they\u2019re tearing that family apart.<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cSamir left Iraq because he would have been killed otherwise and that\u2019s what could happen now if he goes back.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

Zahara added, \u201cWe love our Dad, and we don\u2019t know how we will cope without him.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

It was organised by the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees (IFIR). Its president Dashty Jamal told the crowd, \u201cNot since 2011 have so many Iraqis been picked up in Britain at one time.\u201d <\/span><\/h3>\n

He accused Theresa May of \u201cappeasing her racist supporters\u201d and highlighted the hypocrisy of sending refugees back to a hell Britain\u2019s war helped create.<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cMany refugees were forced to flee Iraq after 2003,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe ongoing war there today is a direct result of the actions of Britain. It is a disgrace to send people back in the middle of a new refugee crisis.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

The detainees and their families are now trapped in fear and uncertainty. <\/span><\/h3>\n

Vian\u2019s husband Daban has been taken to the notorious Verne detention centre<\/a> in Dorset, where it is difficult for those outside to contact them. \u201cThey are in a really bad situation there,\u201d she said. \u201cOne detainee killed himself last weekend, another burned himself on Monday.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

Vian, herself an Iraqi Kurd, now has British citizenship, but Daban couldn\u2019t get permission to come and join her. \u201cThey say the way he got here was illegal,\u201d she said. \u201cBut 90 percent of asylum seekers come to Britain illegally\u2014what else can they do?\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
