Statement by the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees (IFIR) on International Migrants Day

Open the borders to refugees; Migration is not a crime; it is a fundamental human right”

Today, December 18th, coinciding with International Migrants Day, the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees (IFIR) bows its head in respect and honor to the souls of all refugees who sacrificed their lives in the seas, forests, and borders in search of a better and safer life.

This year, International Migrants Day arrives at a time when humanity is passing through a critical and dangerous crisis. The global capitalist system and the policies of major powers have not only failed to provide peace and stability but have become the root causes of bloody wars, environmental devastation, and deepening class inequality. This situation has forced millions of people in Iraq, the region, and the world to choose between “death in their homeland” and the “perils of the migration route.”

We at the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees declare that the causes of displacement are clear and undeniable:

  1. War and Political Conflict: Which have led to devastation and a total lack of security for citizens.

  2. Poverty and Unemployment: Policies of starvation and the corruption of ruling authorities have left youth and families unable to see any horizon for their future.

  3. Climate Change: Drought and water crises, which have gripped large parts of the region, destroying people’s livelihoods.

Despite these tragedies, it is shameful that European countries and governments confront refugees instead of coming to their aid. We strongly condemn the harsh policies enforced against refugees, from the razor wires at borders to the sinking of boats and the racist treatment by border police. Refugees are not criminals; they are the victims of the very policies that have brought the world to this state.

Considering this day, the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees (IFIR) demands:

  • The immediate opening of safe and legal routes for refugees to prevent mass deaths at sea.

  • An end to the policy of “forced deportation” and the granting of the right to remain.

  • Respect for the human dignity of migrants and ceasing to view them as a “security threat.”

Finally, we pledge to always remain the voice of refugees and to continue pressuring for the guarantee of their legitimate rights.

Long live the will of refugees to live.
No to war! No to racism!
